Exam Blocks ยท For paper multiple-choice exams

A Scantron answer key for each version of your test

When the questions are shuffled, each version needs its own key. Exam Blocks prints an answer map with one column per version (the new number, the answer, and the question's number in your original) and the same rows as a CSV, so you fill in one key sheet per version and grade every student against the right one.

A 9-question quiz with its answers marked.
  • Your file never leaves your device.
  • Figures, formulas and tables print as you made them.
  • Free for two versions of up to 20 blocks.
Your page, boxed, becomes Version A and Version B Version A Version B Answer map A1 C A2 B A3 DB1 B B2 D B3 C

Worked case: a 20-question midterm in two versions

  • Box the 20 questions and pick the right letter on each one once. That is 20 picks, not 40.
  • Make the versions. The answer map has a Version A column and a Version B column, 20 rows each: for example, row 1 of Version A might read "1 C 14", meaning question 1 on Version A is your original question 14 and its answer is C.
  • Bubble one key sheet from the Version A column and one from the Version B column. Mark each key sheet with its version.
  • The first page of each version tells students to write its letter on their answer sheet (or fill in the form or version field if your sheet has one). Grade each pile against its own key.

Questions

Can I compare how students did on the same question across versions?

Yes. The "original number" column ties every row back to your original, so question 14 on A and question 6 on B line up as the same item.

What does the CSV hold?

One row per question per version, with these columns: version, new_number, answer, original_number, original_page. It opens in any spreadsheet.

Does it work with any bubble sheet?

Yes. The key is a printed list of letters, so you can copy it onto any answer sheet or grading app. Scantron is a trademark of its owner, and Exam Blocks is not connected to it.

Which answer letters can I pick?

A to E for each question.
